Ten Ways to Move Into Momentum (And Why It Matters More Than Clarity)
By Katie Joy, The Global Butterfly

At the time of writing this, I’m five days into my 180-day body transformation challenge, and if there’s one thing this journey has reminded me of, it’s this:

Momentum is everything.

Forget waiting around for clarity, motivation, or that mythical “perfect time.” You don’t need any of those to start. What you need is momentum. It’s the spark that lights the fire, the push that gets the ball rolling, the thing that turns “one day” into today.

And here’s the kicker: once you have momentum, everything else gets easier. Confidence, clarity, consistency — they’re not prerequisites. They’re byproducts.

So, let’s talk about ten ways you can move into momentum right now — whether you’re chasing a fitness goal, starting a business, writing a book, or just wanting to feel like you’re actually living instead of waiting.

1. Make the Decision First (Clarity Will Follow)

Most people wait until they feel “ready” or “clear” before they start. Spoiler alert: that day rarely comes.

Clarity doesn’t come before the decision. Clarity is born from action.

The moment you decide, really decide, you shift your energy. You move from wobbling in “maybe land” into actual motion. That motion creates feedback. Feedback sharpens vision. And vision fuels the next step.

Decision → Action → Feedback → Clarity.

That’s the real formula.

So, what’s one decision you can make today? Write it down. Say it out loud. Commit.

2. Break It Down Into Micro-Goals

“How do you eat an elephant?”

(Answer: not recommended, but you get the metaphor.)

One bite at a time.

Big goals are inspiring, but they’re also overwhelming. If your dream feels too heavy to lift, you’ll procrastinate forever. That’s why momentum loves micro-goals.

For me, committing to 180 days of body transformation is big. But my daily micro-goals? Drink 3 litres of water. Get my steps in. Show up for a 45-minute strength session.

Small goals build trust. Trust builds confidence. And confidence compounds into results.

So, don’t climb the mountain in a day. Just lace up your shoes and take the first step.

3. Accountability Through Visibility

Let me be real with you.

One of the things that held me back from stepping onto bigger stages in my business wasn’t my skills. It wasn’t my message. It wasn’t my ability to coach.

It was my body.

I didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin. And I thought, “Well, maybe when I lose the weight, I’ll get visible again.”

But that’s backward thinking. So instead, I flipped the script: I made my journey visible. I started sharing it publicly, day by day, reels and all.

Visibility creates accountability. And accountability creates consistency.

You don’t have to go live on Instagram if that’s not your thing. Tell a friend. Start a WhatsApp group. Write a blog. Just share. Because when you’re witnessed, you show up differently.

4. Reframe Setbacks as Feedback

Newsflash: you’re going to screw up.

You’ll miss a workout. You’ll eat the pizza. You’ll procrastinate that proposal.

And it’s fine. Really.

The problem isn’t the setback — it’s the story you tell yourself about it. If you label it as failure, you’ll spiral. If you label it as feedback, you’ll learn.

Back in my paramedic days, we were trained to debrief after every shift. Not to blame. Not to wallow. To ask: What worked? What didn’t? What will we do differently next time?

That’s exactly how I treat setbacks now. I use my Stop/Start/Less/More Framework™:

  • What do I need to stop?

  • What do I need to start?

  • What do I need less of?

  • What do I need more of?

Momentum doesn’t demand perfection. It demands adjustment.

5. Put Energy First

Your energy determines your actions. Your actions determine your outcomes.

So if you’re trying to hustle your way into success without tuning your energy, you’re building on shaky ground.

For me, energy starts with GGA™: Gratitude, Gains, and Appreciation.

  • Gratitude: “Thank you, I’m alive.” (Every paramedic shift reminded me how fragile life really is.)

  • Gains: Focus on what’s working, even if it’s tiny. Celebrate the step, not just the summit.

  • Appreciation: Go deeper. Don’t just be grateful for the sun — appreciate the way it kisses your skin. That kind of detail raises your vibration and grounds you in the now.

When your energy is aligned, momentum flows easier.

6. Consistency Beats Frequency

Frequency matters, sure. But consistency matters more.

It’s not about working out twice a day for a week. It’s about showing up three times a week for a year.

It’s not about writing 5,000 words in one night. It’s about writing 500 words most days.

It’s not about posting 30 reels in 30 days if you disappear afterward. It’s about showing up consistently, even if it’s once a week.

Consistency is what builds trust — with your body, with your business, and with yourself.

7. Celebrate the Journey, Not Just the Destination

Most people live in the gap. They focus on what they don’t have yet, how far they still have to go.

The gap will always make you feel behind.

Instead, focus on the gains. Every rep, every paragraph, every conversation. When you celebrate the journey, the destination becomes inevitable — and way more enjoyable.

This isn’t about toxic positivity. It’s about recognising progress as you go, so you fuel yourself with joy instead of judgment.

8. Redefine Confidence

So many people wait to feel confident before they act.

Here’s the truth: confidence doesn’t come from knowing how. It comes from trusting you’ll figure it out.

Confidence = certainty. And certainty = safety.

You can’t control what life throws at you, but you can anchor safety inside yourself by choosing certainty.

Say this out loud: “I will figure it out.”

That’s confidence. And it will carry you through when the how isn’t clear.

9. Document Your Journey

One of the best ways to build momentum is to see it.

Take the before photo. Record the numbers. Track the habits. Write the journal entry.

Because when you document, you create proof. Proof builds belief. Belief fuels action.

And here’s the fun part: when you share that documentation (even just privately with yourself), it inspires others too. My clients and followers have literally joined gyms or restarted projects because they saw me documenting mine.

Your journey is the most inspiring content you have. Use it.

10. Momentum Loves Community

Ever notice how you push harder in a group workout class than you would alone? Or how you’re more consistent when you’ve got a mastermind call on your calendar?

That’s because momentum loves company.

Surround yourself with people who are also moving forward. Their energy will elevate yours. Their progress will fuel your own. And together, you’ll create a ripple effect.

This is exactly why I created the Soul Goal Mapping Challenge. It’s not just a 5-day process to map out your goals. It’s a community of like-minded souls building momentum together.

Your Next Step

Momentum isn’t magic. It’s a method.

Decide. Take a micro-step. Share. Reframe. Align your energy. Stay consistent. Celebrate. Trust yourself. Document. Join community.

That’s it. Ten ways to move into momentum, starting today.
