From Confusion to Clarity: The Real Reason You Feel Like You Don’t Have a Purpose
(And How to Shift It Energetically)
By Katie Joy, The Global Butterfly
Have you ever had that sinking feeling — that ache in your chest — where you wake up and whisper to yourself:
“Why do I still feel like I don’t have a purpose?”
That was the exact phrase my client Rachel brought into one of our private VIP coaching sessions inside the Love, Light, Leadership Academy this week.
Despite being busy, working hard, and doing all the things… something felt off. Hollow.
She’d just completed a series of builder’s cleans — exhausting, hands-on work that gave her a momentary sense of satisfaction. And yet, the morning after completing the jobs, she woke up with that same question lingering in her chest:
“Why do I still feel like I don’t have a purpose?”
This question is far more common than most people admit — especially for women who’ve spent a lifetime serving others, building businesses, raising families, or putting everyone else's needs before their own.
So, let’s unpack it.
And more importantly — let’s shift it.
The Myth of Purpose as a Destination
We’ve been conditioned to believe that purpose is this one clear, unwavering, carved-in-stone thing.
You’ll know it when you see it. You’ll arrive at it, like a perfect job title or business card. And when you finally find it, you’ll feel fulfilled forever… right?
Wrong.
Here’s the truth: purpose isn’t a destination. It’s a frequency.
Purpose is not something you stumble upon. It’s something you choose to embody.
It’s the energy you bring into every action, every decision, every conversation.
It’s not always glamorous. Sometimes it’s doing the school run. Paying a bill. Making a meal. Showing up — with intention.
So when Rachel told me she felt purposeless, despite having just completed a physically demanding job, we paused and zoomed out.
Completion ≠ Purpose
For Rachel, finishing the job gave her a sense of achievement. That classic “job well done” moment — ticking something off the list. There’s a real sense of satisfaction that comes with that, especially for high-performing women who’ve had to wear many hats.
But I asked her gently:
“Is completion the only time you allow yourself to feel purposeful?”
She paused. And then… something clicked.
Because here’s the trap: when we only allow ourselves to feel purposeful once something is done, we’re constantly chasing. We’re living for the end point. That tick-box moment.
And it means we’re missing the magic in the doing.
Living on purpose means choosing to be present and intentional with every action — even the mundane ones.
When You Feel Like You “Have To”
What often clouds our connection to purpose is the frequency of obligation.
You can do the exact same task in two completely different ways:
-
From victim energy: “I have to do this… I’ve got no choice.”
-
Or from empowered energy: “I choose to do this — for now — and here’s why.”
And let me tell you, the energetic signature of those two realities is worlds apart.
During our session, Rachel realised that most of what she was doing lately had been drenched in the frequency of “I have to.” Work, home, finances… it was all about obligation, not choice.
But here’s what I reminded her — and now you:
You are always at choice.
Even if the options aren’t ideal, you still get to choose how you respond.
The moment Rachel could say, “I chose to do those builder’s cleans,” everything shifted. She reclaimed her energy. She took back her power. That was the frequency of ownership.
Your Energy Holds the Key
Purpose isn’t about what you do.
It’s about the energy you do it from.
You could scrub tiles or build a 6-figure business or speak on stage — and all of those things could feel either purposeful or purposeless depending on the frequency you’re in.
When you’re out of alignment, you might:
-
Feel disconnected from your why
-
Blame others for where you’re at
-
Resent what you’re doing
-
Avoid what’s next
-
Numb out and call it “rest”
But when you re-align, everything changes. You start to:
-
Feel clarity drop in like lightning
-
Magnetise synchronistic moments (I’ll share how that showed up later…)
-
Recognise your value — no matter the external results
-
Step into the next frequency of your becoming
Let’s Talk About Frequency Leaps
Inside The Awakened Soul Program, I teach a simple but powerful framework based on Levels of Consciousness. Most people live bouncing between:
1. Victim Consciousness (Level 1)
-
Life happens to me.
-
I have no control.
-
Everything is happening because of someone else.
This is where Rachel was stuck — not because she’s weak, but because she forgot she had a choice.
2. Hustle & Control (Level 2)
-
Life happens by me.
-
I have to do it all.
-
If I don’t do it, it won’t get done.
This level is seductive — because it looks productive. But it’s rooted in fear. It’s survival disguised as success.
3. Surrender & Intuition (Level 3)
-
Life happens through me.
-
I trust my inner guidance.
-
I release the need to control.
This is where the magic begins.
4. Oneness & Integration (Level 4)
-
Life happens as me.
-
I see myself as part of the whole.
-
I create from unity, not separation.
When Rachel saw this, her face lit up. It was like her whole body exhaled.
One Conversation Changed Everything
At one point in our session, Rachel shared a story about a builder who tried to severely underpay her. In the past, she might have accepted it — afraid of losing the job, or being seen as “difficult.”
But this time, she stood her ground. She quoted her worth — $4 per square metre — and didn’t budge.
Yes, he tried to guilt-trip her. Yes, she doubted herself for a moment. But in the end?
She walked away with her frequency intact.
This wasn’t just about the money.
It was a moment of energetic sovereignty. She chose herself.
And in that moment — she embodied the next frequency of her evolution.
Your Purpose Lives in Your Power
The real reason so many people feel like they “don’t have a purpose” is because they’ve disconnected from their power.
Purpose isn’t found in the perfect career path, or the dream business plan, or a number in your bank account.
Purpose lives in your daily choices.
-
The way you breathe.
-
The way you speak to yourself.
-
The way you move your body.
-
The way you show up — even when nobody’s watching.
And the way you own your energy.
What To Do When You Can’t See the Whole Path
This part’s important, because Rachel voiced something else we’ve all felt:
“I have this money sitting in my account… but I don’t know what to do with it. I feel totally blank.”
Here’s the truth I shared with her — and I’ll offer it to you, too:
You don’t need the whole map to move forward.
You just need the next frequency leap.
Clarity doesn’t come from standing still, waiting for a burning bush.
Clarity comes from movement.
One step.
One aligned action.
One brave moment of saying, “This is what I choose today.”
Final Words: What Would the Next Version of You Do?
If you’re feeling confused about your purpose right now, I invite you to ask yourself:
What would the next version of me do today?
Not the 10-years-from-now version.
Not the final-boss-stage version.
Just the next frequency up.
How would she breathe?
How would she walk into that room?
How would she answer that email?
What boundaries would she hold?
Then, act from her frequency.
Let your energy lead.
And watch what unfolds.
Because the truth is:
You’re not lost.
You’re just being asked to rise.
And your purpose?
It’s already here.
It’s in your next choice.
With love,
