Embracing Calm: The Power of Nervous System Reset After Trauma

Nov 24, 2023

In the face of trauma, finding a path to healing may seem like an insurmountable challenge. I’m a spiritual coach and former paramedic who has not only navigated the front lines of emergency response but has also personally confronted the shadows of domestic violence and narcissistic abuse. I understand the profound impact that trauma can have on the mind and body. Recently, my journey took an unexpected turn as I found myself combating fires in our community, adding a new layer to the ongoing battle against adversity.

In this blog, I share my experiences and delve into the crucial importance of resetting the nervous system after trauma. From recognising the signs of an imbalanced nervous system to practical steps you can take for immediate self-healing, let's embark on a journey together—a journey toward embracing calm and reclaiming control over our well-being.

Facing the Flames: A Personal Encounter with Trauma

This week, our community confronted a relentless blaze that threatened our homes. Due to my former career as a paramedic, I'm accustomed to facing crises head-on, but this experience brought new challenges. The flames, both metaphorical and literal, stirred echoes of past trauma. It emphasised the necessity of not only surviving but thriving beyond the immediate threat.

Why Balancing and Healing are Essential

Trauma has a way of lingering, seeping into the very fabric of our being. The toll on the nervous system can be profound and enduring. Balancing and healing become essential not just as acts of self-care but as survival strategies. The nervous system, when imbalanced, can trap us in a perpetual fight-or-flight state, hindering our ability to move forward.

Recognising the Signs and Symptoms

Before we can embark on the journey of healing, it's crucial to recognise the signs of an imbalanced nervous system. Do you find yourself trapped in negative thought patterns, experiencing heightened anxiety, or haunted by flashbacks? These could be indicators that your nervous system is still in survival mode long after the traumatic event has passed.

5 Simple Steps for Self-Healing

  1. Mindful Breathing: Take short breaks throughout the day to focus on your breath. Inhale positivity; exhale negativity.

  1. Nature Connection: Spend time outdoors, even if it's just a few minutes. Nature has a profound healing effect on the nervous system.

  1. Grounding Techniques: Practice techniques like progressive muscle relaxation to anchor yourself in the present moment.

  1. Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Acknowledge the strength it takes to confront trauma and allow yourself the grace to heal.

  1. Breath of Empowerment: Engage in the guided "Breath of Empowerment" technique from the Nervous System Reset Meditation. Inhale strength, exhale fear, and affirm your safety and resilience.

Embracing calm after trauma is not just a luxury—it's a necessity for reclaiming your life. As we navigate the aftermath of fires and personal trauma, let this be a guide to rediscovering your strength. By resetting the nervous system and taking simple steps toward self-healing, you can move from surviving to thriving. The power to transform is within you; embrace it.
