What If You're Not Afraid of Making More Money, But Afraid of What It Will Demand of You?
Nov 03, 2026
What if the thing holding you back financially isn't your ability to make money, but what you've unconsciously come to believe having more money will mean for you?
Someone recently shared something with me that I thought was incredibly insightful.
She wanted to stop being afraid of money because, in her mind, more money meant more responsibility. And she already had more responsibility than she knew what to do with!
Oh, I could relate to that.
And I suspect a lot of you reading this might too.
Especially if you're the capable one. The resourceful one. The person who somehow manages to hold everything together, figure things out, solve problems and keep going, even when you're exhausted.
You might genuinely desire more money, but somewhere beneath that desire, another part of you is thinking, "Oh God, please don't give me anything ELSE to manage!"
And there's something really important to explore here.
What if you're not actually resisting money?
What if you're resisting the pressure, expectations or responsibility you've unconsciously associated with having more of it?
Your Relationship With Money Started Long Before You Earned Your First Dollar
I certainly didn't grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth.
Quite the opposite.
I remember being the one kid in Year 10 who didn't get to go on the school ski trip because we didn't have the money.
Growing up, money was a constant source of stress in our family. There were periods when things felt a little easier, when perhaps we could afford something beyond the absolute basics, but there was always that underlying uncertainty.
The feast and famine cycle, although, to be fair, there was a whole lot more famine than feast!
I grew up hearing the familiar stories.
"Money doesn't grow on trees."
"We can't afford that."
And there were promises made that couldn't always be kept, which meant plenty of disappointment too.
But here's what affected me most.
It wasn't simply missing out on things.
It was the lack of emotional availability that came with the constant financial stress.
When people are worried about how they're going to pay the bills, keep a roof over everyone's heads or make ends meet, it can become incredibly difficult to be relaxed, present and emotionally available.
And as a child, I felt that.
I knew from around the age of 16 that I wanted to become wildly wealthy.
Not because I wanted to surround myself with expensive things. There's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying beautiful things, by the way!
But what I really wanted was freedom.
The freedom to have quality time with the people I loved. To feel relaxed and peaceful. To have choices and opportunities, and to experience life without that constant undercurrent of financial pressure.
I wanted money to support my life, not control it.
And that desire has stayed with me.
Learning to Work Smarter, Not Just Harder
In my early twenties, I read Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, and it reinforced something I already deeply wanted.
I didn't want to spend my entire life trading more and more of my time for money.
I wanted to learn how money worked, how to create assets, build businesses and develop systems that could generate income without requiring me to personally do every single thing.
And that's exactly what I've spent years learning and implementing.
I've worked hard, absolutely. But I've also worked hard at learning how to work SMARTER.
Over the years, I've generated more than seven figures in online revenue, and I've created income through different business models, digital products, publishing, programmes and systems.
But here's something that might surprise you.
Knowing HOW to make money and having a healthy, peaceful relationship WITH money are not necessarily the same thing.
I've experienced periods in my own life when my unconscious associations with money were very different from what I consciously wanted to create.
And that taught me something incredibly valuable.
You can have all the knowledge, strategies and earning potential in the world, but if your internal relationship with money is working against you, you can find yourself creating patterns that don't support the life you actually want.
Which brings me to something I teach across my work.
Frequency First
Your energy matters.
Your alignment matters.
Being aware of the internal stories you're carrying about money matters.
And your willingness to shift those stories and become more available to a healthier, more supportive relationship with money matters too.
Because money isn't just about numbers in a bank account.
There's also the meaning you've given those numbers.
For one person, more money represents freedom, opportunity and peace of mind.
For another, it represents pressure, responsibility, conflict, expectations or the fear of losing what they've worked so hard to create.
Same money. Completely different internal experience.
And those associations can influence the decisions we make, the opportunities we recognise, what we're willing to receive, and even what we do with money once we have it.
This is why I don't believe creating financial freedom is simply about learning another strategy or pushing yourself to work harder.
Sometimes the most valuable place to begin is within.
Let's Play! A Little Money Meaning Reset
I'd love you to take a few minutes right now and explore something with me.
You don't need a spreadsheet, calculator or another course to complete this little exercise. Just a willingness to be curious about what's happening inside you.
Step 1: Notice your current money story.
Complete this sentence without trying to come up with the perfect answer.
"If I started making significantly more money, I'd have to..."
What came up?
Would you have to work harder? Take on more responsibility? Look after more people? Meet greater expectations? Become more visible? Manage more things?
Or perhaps something completely different?
Don't judge your answer. Just notice it.
Step 2: Question the story.
Now ask yourself:
"Is this actually true? Does having more money HAVE to mean this?"
And here's another question worth exploring.
"Where did I learn to associate money with this experience?"
Perhaps it came from your childhood, your family, a previous relationship, an experience in business or something you witnessed growing up.
You don't have to figure everything out today.
Awareness itself is a powerful beginning.
Step 3: Open yourself to another possibility.
Now I want you to consider a completely different question.
"What if making more money actually allowed me to..."
Have more support?
Spend more quality time with the people I love?
Delegate things I don't enjoy?
Create more breathing space?
Travel, play, rest, explore and experience more of life?
Make decisions from a place of choice rather than pressure?
Notice how different that feels.
Instead of automatically associating MORE money with MORE demands, you're allowing yourself to consider that more money could actually mean LESS pressure.
More ease. More freedom. More support.
And that's a very different relationship to begin creating.
Step 4: Take one aligned action.
Now, here's where we bring the inner work into the real world.
Ask yourself:
"What's ONE thing I could do this week to improve my financial position without automatically adding more pressure to my life?"
Maybe it's reviewing subscriptions or expenses that are quietly draining money from your account.
Maybe it's following up on money someone owes you.
Perhaps it's recognising a skill, piece of knowledge or resource you already have that could create an additional income opportunity.
Or maybe it's finally exploring how to turn something you've already created into an asset that can continue providing value.
It doesn't need to be complicated.
And it certainly doesn't need to become another overwhelming project!
Choose one thing. Take action. Notice what happens.
Because awareness is wonderful, but it's what we do with that awareness that begins creating change.
More Money Doesn't Have to Mean More Work
One of the biggest misconceptions I see is that the only way to make more money is to work more hours.
Now, sometimes increasing your income will involve additional effort, learning or investment, particularly in the beginning.
But more income doesn't automatically have to mean more hours, more stress or more responsibility.
There are so many ways to create value and generate income.
You might already have skills, experience, knowledge, ideas or resources that could be leveraged differently.
And you might be surprised by what's possible when you stop asking, "How can I work harder to make more money?" and start asking, "How could I create more value, more intelligently, with what I already have?"
That's a question I've been exploring for decades, and it's opened up some extraordinary possibilities in my own life.
But remember, this isn't about giving yourself another hundred things to do.
It's about finding what resonates with YOU.
What feels aligned with your values, your interests, your current capacity and the life you're actually wanting to create?
Because what's the point of creating more money if the process costs you the very freedom, peace and connection you wanted it for in the first place?
